There were a few awkward looks from the US and Russian leaders as they met in front of the media.

Mr Trump congratulated Mr Putin for “one of the best ever” World Cups and for the Russian team’s performance in the competition after they reached the quarter-finals.
The US president said the leaders “had a lot of good things to talk about” including trade, the military, missiles, nuclear weapons and China.

“I think we have great opportunities together as two countries that frankly, we have not been getting along too well in last number of years,” Mr Trump said.

“I think we will end up having an extraordinary relationship.

“I really think the world wants to see us get along.”
